De-Clutter Support Group Starting in February in La Porte

I am so excited to be teaching these groups! This is something that I have had on my mind for a year now. I really enjoy teaching my one on one clients how to de-clutter and organize. I felt that there was a need to reach many more in the community with de-cluttering and organizing tools - basically dealing with the "stuff" that we all get buried with. There will be more locations added for the De-Clutter Support Groups throughout this year. Some locations include Valparaiso, New Carlisle, South Bend, New Buffalo. I am looking forward to meeting every single one of you that register for these groups. I cannot wait to hear your stories - and to help.

I just perused The Container Store website for holiday storage ideas. So many great ideas that I wanted to share just a few with you.

Another storage option for ornaments. I love the fact that the bottom is clear. Very visually appealing!

This option is nice because it folds up and can be hung in the closet when not in use.

Storage for fragile ornaments. And it is lovely!

The ultimate gift wrap organizer/wrapping station.

Great option for under the bed storage. Here they also use the small, clear accessory boxes to organize ribbon, tape, etc.

A New Year - A New Start

Throughout this past year, have you been thinking these thoughts - "I want to use this room as a guestroom, but there is so much clutter," or "I have so many books that I would like to be able to sit down and read - but they are so scattered, I can't find the one I want to read," or "I would like to enjoy my family photos but they are scattered everywhere and dis-organized."

If you have had those thoughts or similar ones throughout this past year, now is the time to change. The new year always brings a fresh start and a new beginning. Now is the time to start planning for the new year - and for your new start.

You can begin the process by making a list of what you want to do over the next year. Write everything down - no matter how silly you may think it is. I'll give you an example:

1.   Paint the house.
2.   Learn to water ski.
3.   Go to the movies once a month.
4.   Clear the spare bedroom of clutter.

Now give it a few days and come back to the list. Re-evaluate. Some things you may want to eliminate. You may want to add to it. Or you may want to change your numerical order on some things. Once you have gone through your list, you will need to schedule time in your calendar to actually DO these things.

You may have to backward schedule in order to get some things completed. For example, clearing the spare bedroom of clutter. You won't want to do this in one day - you will burn out, get frustrated and give up. And haven't you been there before? You may want to schedule as follows:

1.   Gather boxes, trash bags, markers.
2.   Schedule de-cluttering time on the calendar. (If you can do 4 hours per week, you will have that room cleared in no time!)
3.  Honor your calendar entry and be there when it is time to de-clutter. Remove as many interruptions as possible so that you can stay focused.
4. Organize what is left in the room once you have finished de-cluttering.
5. Maintain the room daily or weekly.

This is just an example. What I wish for you to take away from this is - anything is possible. If you know what your goal is and plan it out, you can accomplish anything.

Tips to Keep You (Somewhat) Sane Over the Holidays

I am in the midst of preparing a 10 minute speech for Wednesday about organizing for the holidays. I will be speaking to the Business Women United - Chesterton Alliance.

I thought I would post the tips here so that everyone can benefit. Or mock them. Whichever.

1.   Store all of your gifts in one place. Along with those gifts, keep your gift wrap and accessories.
      That way, everything will be together. Easier to wrap and no gift will be forgotten.

2.   Holiday products and bundles.
      They are so attractive, right? Everyone from Dove bath products to Dove chocolate has a "special" holiday package full of extras. This is great if you actually use the product. If you do not and are enticed by the beautiful packaging, you may end up regretting that purchase and it will probably turn in to clutter. It is not a bargain if you don't already use and love it.

3.   Decide as a family what special holiday activities you will be participating in.
     You cannot be 5 places at one time. You can try, but you will be totally stressed out and end up not enjoying the holidays.

4.   Set a budget for the holidays.
     What will you spend for gifts, food, entertainment over the holidays? Come January, will you regret it or be comfortable with what you spent?

5.   Hostess gifts.
     If you will be a guest in someones home this holiday season, take a small token of your appreciation. A bottle of wine or a box of chocolates work well...........and they are clutter free! Unfortunately, they are not calorie free.....

6.   Christmas cards.
     Save time by ordering pre-signed cards from your local printer or Vista Print. It's the thought that counts and if you have time you can always write a special thought in the card.

    Also, start a list on your computer for your holiday cards and print the addresses onto mailing labels. This makes it really easy to change addresses when someone moves or add names when new friends or a new little someone comes into our lives.

7.   Cooking/baking.
    What can you make ahead of time and freeze? Cookies, casseroles? When you need them, just remove from the freezer and thaw.

8.   Gifts.
    You have been given a gift. You love the giver. You absolutely hate the gift. That is okay. I give you permission to donate it. Remember, it is the thought that counts.

9.   Decorations.
    As you are pulling your decorations out of storage, you may come across some that you no longer like or want to display. Donate them. Once you do, you can either replace what you have donated or just enjoy the extra storage space that you now have.

10. Perfection.
      You will not be perfect during this holiday season. Face it and move on. This is survival time, people.  When you strive for perfection and do not make it (in your eyes) you feel like a failure. I give you permission to not be perfect. Do the best you can and enjoy the holiday.

This holiday season, use your credit card points to purchase gift cards for those on your gift list. You have the points, now use them! It may make purchasing gifts just a little less painful.

The other benefit of purchasing gift cards? You are giving a clutter free gift. Plus, you don't have to wrap anything. Simply place the gift card into a Christmas card, sign your name and you are done.

Itunes (my personal gift of choice!)

Now, go check your points balance with your credit cards and get those gift cards ordered. Christmas will be here before you know it!

De-clutter & Deck the Halls

Okay, I will admit it.   I have begun decorating for Christmas. I could not help myself.

In the process of taking the decorations from storage, I decided to let some of them go. Here is my criteria for what went:

1. I no longer liked it.
    Our tastes change over the months and years.

2.  It was a gift from someone and I never liked it.
     It really is the thought that counts.......enough said.

3. I no longer wanted to store it, maintain it or go all out decorating.
     You only have the space you have. I am not willing to take up as much room storing my Christmas items as I have in the past.   I used to really go all out and decorate to the point where it looked like Christmas threw up in our home. At this point, I just don't have the time or quite honestly the energy to go all out. Simple is so much better!

I will be taking my un-wanted decorations to Goodwill. Which is perfect timing for them since they can sell Christmas decorations now instead of storing them for next year.

I feel good about the amount of decorations I have at this point. Just about every decoration has a special memory or meaning. I cut out the rest of the "stuff."

I have not set the tree up yet - I will restrain myself until after Thanksgiving..............

I REALLY STEPPED IN IT THIS TIME……

Anyone out there a germ-a-phobe like me in public bathrooms? Do any of you flush the toilet with your foot? You know, hit the silver bar with your foot so the toilet flushes?

So let me set up this little scenario for you. My husband and I are at the York Train meet in York, PA held at the fairgrounds. Now, the women’s bathrooms inside the buildings are staffed by women who are continually cleaning the stalls, mirrors, floors, spraying air freshener, making sure the toilet paper and paper towels are stocked, selecting a radio station (not kidding), etc. Weirdest thing I’ve ever seen but then again, I won’t turn my nose up at a clean public restroom. So, there are signs posted that they work for tips so please be generous. Okeydokey.

So, I go to flush with my foot and I manage to flush but I also…………….lost my balance and my foot slipped. Yep, right into the still flushing toilet.

Oh yeah, and did I mention that at this time it was just me and the bathroom attendant present at the time? She must have heard something like this………….flush, PLOP, splash, splash (you know, me trying to remove my foot from the commode). I walked out, washed my hands and threw money in the tip jar…………not looking up once.

Now, after telling my husband what I had done and picking him up off the floor from laughter, I reflected on this whole experience. Why? Because it’s just what I do………….. And I found some positives:

1. The water in the toilet bowl was not blue. Can you just see me walking around with one blue tennis shoe and one white?

2. I was wearing tennis shoes and not sandals. Had I been wearing sandals, I think I would have asked to borrow the attendant’s disinfectant right then and there.

3. Like I said before, these bathrooms are clean and I mean really clean. So clean that my right shoe was much whiter than my left shoe after its "christening."

So what I am telling you is – when you “step in it” or someone “slips up” and it affects you – try to think of the positives in the situation – and what you can laugh at.

Hope I gave you all a laugh and remember ……………….professional organizers are not perfect. We step in it every now and again!

Eat and Don't Run!

At Mass today, our priest was talkinga about gathering as a family for meals and the benefits that it offered. I had no idea that gathering as a family at least 5 times a week could improve your child's grades as well as preventing self destructive behaviors, to name a few.

One barrier that may stop you from enjoying a meal with your family may be clutter. Some tips to help you de-clutter and organize your kitchen are:

1. Create zones in your kitchen to save steps:
Some examples of zones are baking, cooking, chopping/preparation zones.

2. De-clutter your gadgets. Instead of buying one gadget for every process, buy one gadget that does multiple things.

3. Make it easy for your children to set the table. Place your dishes (not the good china) in a low cabinet as well as your placemats and glasses.

I Want You To Meet My New Friend

Isn't she gorgeous? She is my brand new organizing bag.

I got her from L.L. Bean last week after ditching my trusty backpack. Why? The backpack was okay but it was not GREAT. It was too deep and everything that was not in a container of it's own fell right to the bottom. This "bean bag" has the potential to be great.

This bag is actually mean for packing toiletries when traveling. I re-purposed it.

I am still in the process of tweaking my new bag. Right now I have all of my small parts (paper clips, tape, rubber bands) in my roll up bag. I may be ditching the roll up bag in favor of the small pockets that my new bag contains. Also, this bag is designed to hang on a hook. Inside the bag is an over the door hanger that I purchased that should fit the bill.

I will report on further developments on my new bag.

What Is Holding You Back?

The beginning of this year, I did some re-evaluating regarding my business. I took some time to think about where my time and money were being spent and what kind of return I was receiving.

After re-evaluating, this is what I did:

I eliminated extra web pages on my website that were taking extra time to maintain and were unnecessary.
I switched from using Constant Contact to using Mail Chimp for my newsletters. (Mail Chimp is a free service and has most of the same functionality as Constant Contact.)
Instead of offering a monthly newsletter, I now offer a quarterly newsletter.
I eliminated one business networking group from my schedule. This freed up my time (it was a weekly meeting) and my money (it was a huge investment.) Also, it was not a good fit for me as this group did not represent my target market.

I joined two business women networking groups who I really connect with and who understand me and what I offer.

Here is what happened after I implemented these changes:

Since I do not have the extra pages on my website to maintain, I could focus that time on my public speaking, which brought me in contact with more people who needed my services.

Since I eliminated the monthly newsletters, I now have more time to include more content to the newsletters.

Since I eliminated the business group that was not working for me and joining two that did, I have more clients and thereby more income. I was initially scared to leave the first business networking group, but now that I have, I see that it was holding me back.

So, my question for you is - what is holding you back? Not sure how to get started? Eliminate one thing that you are questioning and see how you feel and see what new opportunities come your way. You never know what opportunities are waiting for you once you eliminate barriers.

Simplicity + An End To Summer

As I was driving around today, enjoying the end of summer weather, I began to think about all the things that make me happy.............which are not things at all. Like...........

Enjoying the scenery when the farmers get "artsy."

Peeling potatoes for the chicken dinner at the polish festival.

Watching our cats enjoy the outdoors.

Beautiful flowers.

So enjoy the simplicity around you.......enjoy the quiet or the sounds of the frogs and crickets at night. Life isn't always about things. It is about the simple pleasures we are sometimes to distracted to notice.

Copy the Contents of Your Wallet

Ladies (and gentlemen) - if you ever have your purse or wallet stolen (which I hope never happens to any of you,) I have a suggestion to make contacting your financial and other institutions easily:

Copy the cards that you have in your wallet. Place them on your copy machine, copy the fronts and the backs.

Place the copies in a safe place.

If you do not have a copy machine at home and are doing this in a public place, please make sure that you leave with all of your cards.

Place this task in your to-do list on a yearly basis to update the copies for any changes or additions in cards.

We Are Not Playing Games.......Organizing Games and Toys

Game Closet Before

Here are some simple solutions to end the battle with game pieces, messy art supplies and puzzles. Ya know, the ones with 500 pieces that make you cringe as they are flung across the floor? This is how won the game against Milton Bradley and Crayola.

Designate an area in your house that is for games and toys that require supervision from an adult.

First, discard toys that are no longer played with or missing too many pieces.

Then measure each game and purchase (or reuse) plastic containers for storage.

Cut off the front of the box and place it in the new container with all the supplies. This helps the non-reader know what game goes where.

*MOMMY TIP*

Ditch the cardboard box. It’s just not worth the hassle. But remember to keep the directions.

Also, think vertical space. Small games and puzzles can go in Ziplock bags and be hung with pant hangers.

Finally, label each game, arrange them and create a list of rules to go with the new space.

Congratulations! You’re a winner! Now you know were the fun begins on the next rainy day. This limited access gives kids time to miss the games, control over the mess of the day. Your children will also feel special knowing it’s playtime with their favorite person, YOU!

Get Out ..............of Your Office with these Tips!

Tips to Organize Your Office and Your Workday

“Plan the work and work the plan,” is a phrase I have heard many times. Do you wonder what you will do today or do you work the plan? If your office is in chaos you might be wondering how to fix it. Boy do I have some solutions for you!

First let me reiterate a quote from Peter Walsh, “physical clutter equals mental clutter.” When your eyes and mind are being bombarded with visual clutter it clouds your mind and judgment. It may make you feel uneasy and unable to focus. So I’m going to let you in on some simple tips to get you started organizing your office and workday!

1.   Reduce the visual clutter. Grab a trash bag and a box. Anything that is obviously garbage or recycling goes in either the bag or box.

2.   Set goals. What do you want out of life? Out of your business? Out of your week or day? If you take a trip and don’t have a map and a plan to get where you are going, how will you know when you have arrived?

3.   Separate your work and personal life. If both must coincide in your office, make sure that your work paperwork and accessories stay separate from your personal paperwork and accessories.

4.   If you don’t have an actual office space, make do with what you have now. Use two sawhorses and an old door for a desk. Use boxes as your filing cabinet. Just make sure that the space you have is designated for you to work.

5.   The night before, make a list of what needs to be done the next day. Rank the to-do’s as to importance. Complete the list in that order. What does not get done that day will go on to be tomorrow’s to-do list.

6.   Group to-do’s together. If you need to make phone calls, make them all at once.

7.   Organize your files.

8.   Once your papers are filed, maintain it. Take the last 5 minutes out of every day to file your paperwork. If you don’t have time or don’t want to do it, then hire someone to take care of it for you.

9.   Set your work hours. Stick to them.

10. Store your excess office supplies in a cabinet or closet. Group like items together so that you know what you have. For example – store your paper, files and envelopes together.

11. Use a notebook to write down your thoughts and ideas instead of grabbing a post it. This way you will have one place to look for everything.

After your office is organized, you’ll “wonder” why you didn’t do it sooner. You will benefit in extra income and extra time.

Have Jewelry, Can't Find It?

Do you have great pieces of jewelry but you just can't find it, see it or remember to put it on before you head out the door? I have a great solution for you.

I have a double sided jewelry bag like this hanging in my closet. I love it because I can see everything. It makes accessorizing so easy. I used to have a traditional jewelry box, but that just didn't work for me because I couldn't see everything - it seemed like it was all jumbled together. With my hanging jewelry organizer, all of my jewelry is visible and it doesn't take up room on my dresser. I love that!

A Warning to Vacationers

If you are not vigilant on vacation and let your guard down for one minute, tchotchke's and brochures will invade your luggage, vehicle, purse - even your pockets!

To guard against the evil invasion of the tchotchke's and brochures think before you buy:

Where will I put this when we get home? If you don't have a space for it, don't buy it.

Will it translate into my normal life after vacation?

Can I just take a photo of it with my camera phone to look back at and laugh later?

Can I get this information online? Brochures are a paper version of a website. So, if you see an interesting brochure, take a photo of it or write the name in a notebook. Look it up when you get home.

The photo above was taken with my smart phone at a Disneyworld gift shop a few years ago. If you have been to Disney and have experienced the monorail transportation system, you know this phrase well. I took a photo of the t-shirt to remember it. I certainly was not about to buy it - where would I wear it? And if I had purchased the shirt and worn it - most people would have no clue what it meant. SO glad I only took a photo.

Just remember the questions above when the urge to purchase on vacation washes over you. You will return home so much lighter.

A Clearer, Simpler Way to Eat

Never in a million years did I ever think I would consider becoming a vegetarian or even a vegan. This book has changed my mind. In The Kind Diet, Alicia Silverstone explains the environmental impact eating meat, eggs and dairy have to our world.

She also explains that when we cut out meat, eggs and dairy, we start living more simply and really start connecting with our bodies natural rhythm. I like that - and the word simply just stuck out for me.

I think this is just another piece of the puzzle to truly become less stressed, less cluttered and to focus on what's important.

I am going to slowly incorporate a vegan diet into my lifestyle. It is not going to be easy and I'm sure I'll fall off the wagon many times, but if a simpler and healthier way to eat and a healthier planet is what I get in return, I'll give it a shot!

Do You Have A Vision?

The photo that you see above is my vision board. This is what I look at when I sit at my desk. It motivates me, makes me look forward to the future.

I'd like to tell you about some of the photographs on my vision board:

I have two photographs of a convertible Murano. I see myself tooling around a lovely vacation spot in this little gem.

I have two photographs of the Hotel Hershey. This is one of my favorite places to visit. It is a beautiful hotel, but more than that, they have an out of this world spa. Once a year, my husband and I take a vacation to Pennsylvania. He attends a toy train convention for a day and I get to spend one entire day at the spa. It is the one day out of the year that I take all for myself. One. Whole. Day. Need I say more?

To the top right of the board, I have a note that was written by my grandma. I found it after she passed away. My grandma was one for jotting down her thoughts on paper - any paper she found anywhere. On this paper she wrote, "millionaire business woman - Wendy." Now, I have no idea where she was going with this - but I take is as an affirmation that my grandma believed in me and the work that I am doing.

I also have a photo of a beach cottage. I have this because one of my goals is for my husband and myself to take June, July and August off every year to escape to our cottage (the one that at this point exists only in our dreams). I want to spend every summer bicycling, hiking, picnicking and reading.

Here is the interesting thing about this board. I have had it up for about 3 years now. Recently, I added the photo of the beach cottage to the board. While I was rearranging some photos, I came across a note that I had written with the intention reading, "work from home consulting." When I wrote that, I was doing only hands on organizing. Now, three years later I am consulting from home. That blew me away.

When I created this board, I had just finished reading, "The Secret." In "The Secret", one of the contributors talks about his vision board. He and his family moved, he packed up his vision board and never opened the box again until about 5 years down the road. In that time, he and his family had moved two more times. When he opened the box containing the vision board, he was taken aback. One of the photos on the board was of the home he was now living in. He had cut out a photo of his dream home years before, posted it on the vision board and forgot about it. He was now living the dream.

I think it all comes down to believing in what you are doing, and posting a picture of your intentions in your mind every day by seeing your vision board.

What Will You Do With 246 Days?

That's it. As of today, April 29th, 2011 - there are 246 days left until New Year Day 2012. What will you do with 246 days?

The letter below was written by a woman in South Portland, ME and was featured in body+soul magazine. She has a great idea for getting rid of the clutter in her home.....one day and one items at a time.

Clutter Queen

Last year, I finally decided to do something about all of the clutter in my house. My plan? Get rid of 365 things in 365 days. I started with small items and soon found that viewing the junk in my home with an eye for decluttering helped me see more and more things that I no longer needed. By the end of the year, I had reached my goal. In addition to opening space in my home, I also freed up time, since I don't have to clean and pick up as much. This project deeply changed my worldview about possessions, clutter and what makes a home.

6 Hours Clipping Coupons? 1 Hour in the Checkout Lane? Stockpiling? What Do You Think?

I just watched Extreme Couponing on TLC last week. I was curious to find out how one would walk into a grocery store with two carts stacked full and walk out only paying $6.00 - or sometimes less.

What I learned was:

1.   These women will spend up to 6 hours daily clipping or searching for coupons.
2.   You sometimes will have to buy a dozen or more of an item because it only goes on sale once a year.
3.   You have to stand in line in the checkout and divide your entire purchase into smaller purchases to get the best discount.
4.   Because items only go on sale once a year and you have to buy dozens, it is necessary to stockpile them.
5.   One woman stockpiles in every room of her home - even her daughter's bedroom.

So, I ask you - what do you think? Is it worth it? Would you do it?

I'll tell you what I think (there's a shocker):

1. If you have the time to clip or search for coupons, great. Go for it.
2. If you have room in your home and want to stockpile, great.

For me, this would never work because there is no way I can devote even an hour of my time to clipping coupons and there is no way I'll shop for 2 hours and then stand in the checkout line for an hour and stress over dividing the entire purchase into separate purchases.

Also, the stockpiling. I just could not handle it. And really, will you ever use the 24 bottles of shampoo you have stockpiled - or the dozen bottles of calcium tablets before they expire?

Spring Fever Got Me Again!

This time, it surrounded my coffee maker (a.k.a. my reason for getting out of bed in the morning.)

I noticed that my coffee wasn't tasting as good as it normally did. That's when it dawned on me - I hadn't run a batch of vinegar through the machine for a while. Ah ha!

So I ran a batch of vinegar through along with 3 more batches of water to make sure the vinegar was out of the coffee maker. It made a world of difference! So I pass this little tip on to you today to make your reason for getting out of bed in the morning taste better.

I have the FEVER!

Spring fever! Well, I had it at least. (Sunday was close to 50 - today temperatures are dropping and we are expecting snow.) This past Sunday. I was a woman possessed. Purging items I no longer wanted, used or needed.

For instance, I got this snazzy new water bottle at the Expo for Women at the Century Center from Memorial Sleep Disorder Center booth (thanks!) So I used the one-in-one out rule. Or in this case the one- in-two-out rule.

In the photo below you will see my cabinet "before" the removal of two plastic water bottles.

Notice how everything just fits better? I love this rule and use it all the time. I am always in a state of one-in- one-out and that keeps a good balance in my household. Whether it be purses, blankets, towels, dishes.

They didn't hold that much water and I find the blue tinted water bottles more attractive and appealing. They make me want to drink water. These little guys above were great if you wanted to match your outfit but it was time for them to go into recycling.

Trendy Trade

In keeping in line with my last post about clothing, I want to tell you about a great event that I attended this past Sunday.

My friend Jamie held her inaugural Trendy Trade on February 27th at the South Bend Chocolate Cafe in South Bend.

This was a great girls get together! I brought 7 items of clothing that no longer fit me, looked attractive on me or that I just did not want any longer. I brought back 2 great items (which I think is a great ratio) - if you are a Facebook user you can see them here .

I invited Deb Handrich to join me at the Trendy Trade swap party - Deb is a stylist and she was giving great advice to everyone about the styles that would flatter their figures. I found out that I am an inverted triangle - meaning I'm bulkier on top than I am on the bottom. Has this changed the way I am going to dress? You bet!

I Put the Perfect Outfit Together Once

I'll be the first to admit, I am no fashionista. I want to be. Really, I do. I am so bad that when I see a mannequin in the store wearing an outfit I like, I buy each piece and try to re-create the look. Sad, huh? Here's the problem - I get the perfect outfit together, wear it, wash it and return it to my closet, it's forgotten. I group my pants, dresses, skirts, tops together and then I group them further by color. I never got the hang of remembering what went with what - only that my closet is a perfectly ordered array of color.

I love books. Books can teach, transport you to another world, enlighten you, make you laugh or cry. There is also one other thing that books can do and that is to cause clutter. Yes, you can have too many books.

Professional Organizers Aren't Just for Hoarders and the Chronically Disorganized

One big misconception for professional organizers like myself is that we are only for those who are really messy. So messy that they can't open their front doors and they appear on the show Hoarders. Not so. Have I worked with and am I trained and educated to work with the chronically disorganized and hoarders - yes.

However, my service is for anyone. I work with people who need a spruce up for their kitchen, closet, home office, etc. For that situation, they may just want to consult with me and get ideas as well as possibly a step by step plan to get them de-cluttered and organized. In that case, I talk with them over the phone and then schedule a time to see the space they need ideas on - I do this either in person or over the computer or through emails depending on where they live.

I work with professionals who's office or filing systems are not working for them. I have set up a filing system for a client who just used the tops of surfaces to pile because she did not know how to set up a filing system.

I work with widows who want to de-clutter their homes, get organized and get a fresh start.

I work with mothers who need a room de-cluttered and then defined (in other words, the room has way too many functions and cannot function properly so I help my client define the space.)

I work with couples who have organized the basement on their own many times but the clutter and disorder keeps coming back. I teach them how to de-clutter, how to organize the keepers as well as how to keep it organized.

Last year, I changed my title from professional organizer to organization and productivity consultant. I did this because professional organizer never really encompassed everything that my job entails. Yes, I help clients to de-clutter and get organized but I also teach them techniques and new ways of thinking that help them to be productive.

What do I do with all these kid’s clothes? When my children grow out of clothing I put them into one of three places:

Save: Clothes that have sentimental value.

Too Small: Outfits that I plan to sell. (Garage sale, consign or eBay)

Donate: Clothes that are in good, but not excellent condition.

Mommy Tips:

Label another tote “too big”. Store clothing here that are hand-me-downs or end of the season bargains. You’ll know just where to go when Suzy needs a new pair of pants.

Use under the bed storage bins as an alternative to having the totes in the closet.

Organizer vs. Aqua Net

The funniest things can happen when you are de-cluttering..............

Yesterday, while a client and I were de-cluttering her bathroom closet she came across a really old bottle of Aqua Net. Well, my client is a very tactile person (a.k.a. she has to touch everything). So when she said, "I'm just going to see if there's any left before I toss it," I thought okay, no problem. The nozzle got jammed and it would not stop spraying!

So picture this - she and I are standing in a very small bathroom, with a can of Aqua Net that is not going down without a fight. No sooner do I say, "Put it in the shower," that my client takes off for the back door of the house - with the defiant Aqua Net in hand. So, I follow after her. She's alternating between laughing/screaming, screaming/laughing and I'm doing the same. We pass her husband who's sitting at the kitchen table eating his lunch who's jaw drops to the floor as we fly by him. She gets to the back door and tosses the offending can of Aqua Net into the snow to be dealt with later. She looks at me and says, "I've always hated Aqua Net," and we get back to de-cluttering.

After a while, she comes across another aerosol can and says, "I'm just going to see if there's anything left before I toss it." I'm like - "really?" Gales of laughter ensue and at the end of the session I pack up all offending aerosol cans to be held until the next hazardous waste drop off at the fairgrounds.

That was a unique situation and both the client and I got a good laugh out of it. So for the record the score would be - Organizer - 1 Aqua Net - 0.

Cut the Clutter - Lose the Fat?

In his book, Does This Clutter Make My Butt Look Fat?: An Easy Plan for Losing Weight and Living More(great title, right?) Peter Walsh explores the correlation between physical clutter in your home or office and physical clutter on your body (excess weight).

I think he has something there. Of course, anyone that's ever talked to me knows that I believe Peter Walsh is a genius, but let's explore his concept further......

Let's say if your home is cluttered and disorganized and you have no idea how to fix it and you are an emotional eater, you may be substituting food for working on de-cluttering and organizing your home. Often, food is used to push down the feelings that we have or to make us feel full or whole. You may come home from a long day at work, enter your home and it's an absolute wreck. How do you feel about that? Sad, ill at ease, unable to relax and unwind? You may reach for that bag of Oreo's to improve your feelings. Of course, your home will still be in the same condition after the Oreo's are consumed.

In extreme circumstances, a kitchen may be totally unusable because of the clutter. In other words you may not be able to use your kitchen counters to prepare a meal or the stove top leaving you no other choice but to pick up fast food on the way home which is a sure fire way to gain weight and be unhealthy.

So if you are in this boat and it's sinking fast, here is what I suggest for you do:

1.   Think about what you want out of your home and out of your life. Is your home equipped to give you what you want? If not, it's time to change.

2.   De-Clutter. You'll need boxes marked Move (for items that don't belong in the room you are currently de-cluttering), Donate, Recycle, Trash.

3.   Start with one room at a time and completely finish it before moving on to the next room. If your kitchen is a wreck and not supporting you and what you want from your life, I would start there.

4.   Make a decision about every item that you pick up. It will fit into one of the boxes in #2. The items that you keep, you will need to group together in "like" categories. For example, if you are de-cluttering your kitchen, you will want to keep all baking items together.

5.   Once you have made a decision on every item in the room, it's time to organize the keepers. Remember to keep "like" items together when placing them into cupboards, bookshelves, pantries.

Once you have de-cluttered and organized one room, you will have the motivation to move on to another. Remember this isn't about getting rid of the stuff - it's really about a lifestyle change and about how you feel about things. It's about how you want to live your life.

Peter Walsh talks about his clients de-cluttering their homes and in turn they lose weight. With all of the weight loss plans out there now, I think Mr. Walsh's is the most sound. What do you think?

With clients that I have had the pleasure to work with, I hear the following phrases over and over again - I feel lighter, a burden has lifted, I never thought I could do this, I feel free, I feel happy. So I do see the correlation between losing the clutter and losing the burdened feelings.

When you can walk into your kitchen and prepare a healthy meal and really enjoy it - that is the ultimate in clutter free, healthy living. And you can do it. Anything is possible and you can change your life - it does not have to be like it is now forever.

"What Happens After I Call You?"

You may be wanting to call or email me for help clearing your clutter, organizing (either in person or virtually) or are interested in a social media package but are wondering what happens once you make contact with me. So I'm going to run through what happens once a potential client contacts me.

First, I return the call or email - sounds logical, right? I chat with you about what you are needing help with. I may either send or email you a questionnaire so that I can get as much information from you, to help you as possible. Then I schedule a telephone consultation with you to learn more about your challenges, ask questions and we talk some more.

After the telephone consultation, I schedule a home or office consultation where I come into your home or office and you show me your challenge areas - or the whole home or office - whatever you are comfortable with. We look at the space that needs attention together and I ask more questions. At the end of the consultation we talk about whether we both want to work together. If we both want to work together I will talk to you about what packages I offer and what they cost. We decide together what will fit best for your time frame and budget. I offer payment plans, as well. Once we decide on a package then it's time to schedule our organizing sessions.

The next step are the organizing sessions and I'll talk about what happens in those sessions in a later post.

So Much To Say, So Little Time

So to prepare for my interview on WNDU's morning show, I wrote out everything that I thought I could fit into a 4 minute interview...............I didn't even get 1/4 of what I wanted to say said. After the video was posted on WNDU's site I couldn't believe that it was almost 4 minutes long - to me, it seemed like seconds had passed! You can still watch the interview by visiting here.

I debated on whether or not to bring containers and the Purse Perfector. I was glad that I did so that I had a visual - something interesting to look at. However, I don't want viewers to think that if they buy the containers, that everything will organize itself. I always tell clients (and whoever else is willing to listen - friends, family, strangers) to buy containers after you de-clutter and organize the keepers. That way, you will know exactly what size container you need for each category of keeper. And when I say container that could mean a bookcase, file drawer, clear container, bench - whatever will fit the items that you have grouped together.

Don't Set Resolutions - Set Goals

Goals are more quantifiable, measurable. When you set a "resolution" do you stick to it? No. Because you cannot measure it.

This past May, I started using www.toodledo.com. I learned about this online task list at the NAPO 2010 Conference. It allows me to set goals - and check them regularly to see if I am on track. I'm happy to say that the goals I set for myself and for my business in the beginning of 2010, I have met. I think this program should get some of the credit.

I can also schedule my to-do's which I use to plan my goals. www.toodledo.com will tell me what's overdue, due the next day and I can even look forward 7-10 days.

I can schedule a to-do from my phone, which is great when a task pop's into my head when I'm no where near a computer.

So, set your goals, plan the tasks that will get you there and look forward to what you will accomplish in the new year!

I do not like the other purse organizers out there and I'll tell you why by telling you why I think the Purse Perfector Purse Organizers are the best thing since sliced bread.

The Community Reserve of New Carlisle

I visited the Community Reserve of New Carlisle's Clothing Giveaway at the Wesleyan Church in New Carlisle last Saturday at the invitation of Marvin Larue. I met Marvin and his wife through a networking group that I belong to. I was so impressed with the organization of this charitable operation!

The Community Reserve had 14 friendly volunteers work to set up the clothing giveaway in 4 1/2 hours.

The day that I visited, the Community Reserve had helped 114 people and 27 families.

Today, Thanksgiving Day, is a day to enjoy your family and friends and to be thankful for what you have. However, if what you have is just way too much and you need to de-clutter and get organized, may I suggest donating your clothing, household items and furniture to The Community Reserve? A Clean Van Makes a Happy Family

With the holidays upon us - and holiday travel, my guest blogger Audra will fill you in on organizing your vehicle for the upcoming travel season. As Audra says, a clean van does indeed make for a happy family - and a happier trip!

Last week I climbed in my van and found that after a month of neglect is was a mess! I couldn’t find anything I needed and everything that was missing from inside the house. Has anyone else found a toothbrush in the car? Here’s a few tips for moms on how to organize your minivan, or car, so it’s family friendly and not a trash can on wheels. For me the key to keeping the van organized is having a place for everything. I also keep things right at my fingertips for when I’m driving and need to handle a sticky situation.

First, de-clutter the van by taking everything out. Get rid of trash and recycling. Then, sort the rest of the stuff into two containers. Use one box for things to move back to their proper home, and the other for things that belong in the car. These items return to their new and improved space after a quick vacuum and window washing. Encourage your family members to move their own items while you keep cleaning.

Wash, vacuum and clean the windows. If this is too big of tacks, enlist the kids to help or hire someone to do the detailing.

Below are some before and after photos. See that nice green baskets? Get some. They will help you organize the space keep things from hiding under the seats. Boxes, small totes and the huge Ziploc bags also work. Stay tuned for what to put in those new containers.

Next time you’re at a big box store, buy a package or two of Velcro. I’ve used it everywhere! My breadbox lid doesn’t suddenly spring open any more. Little Girl’s car seat buckles; not under her bottom anymore. And her pants with the impossible button, has now been reborn with Velcro in the button’s place. In our home we also have gadgets with Velcro around the handles so they will stick to the wall. The garage door opener? It’s stuck right their on the side of the charging station by the front door. Heck I’ve even put Velcro on a pencil and stuck it right to a student’s desk. Where can you use some Velcro in your home or office?

Will You Be Hosting Guests Over The Holidays? Get Your Guest Room Ready Now.

If you will be having friends and family staying with you over the holidays, now is the time to de-clutter and set up your guest room.

Start by de-cluttering the room. Use a trash bag, a recycle box, a box marked move, and a box marked donations. Work from the left to the right of the room. Remove all obvious trash and recycling first. Then start grouping like items together. As you are doing this, you will find items that need to be moved to another room. Place them in the move box. You will also find items that you no longer want, use or need. Place them in the donations box. Once you have gone through the entire room and remove the move box (move the items to where they belong), remove the donations box to your local Goodwill, throw out the trash and recycling, you will have a de-cluttered room. Organize what's left into appropriate sized containers or drawers, etc.

Place extra towels in the room as well as blankets and extra pillows.

Place some magazines and books in the room for your guests enjoyment as well as some dvd's if the room is equipped with a television and dvd player.

If your guests will be touring your town without you, leave maps and a list of attractions so that they can occupy their time and see the local sites.

You know all those soaps you collected from your trips? Place them into a basket for your guests.

Don't forget a box of kleenex in the room.

Your friends and family will be impressed with your organization.............and they will feel right at home.

Let Me Tell You About My New Deodorant

Catchy title, huh? I want to share this with you because it has saved me time and could possibly save my health.

At this past springs NAPO Conference I roomed with Kim Pastor of Be Organized. Well, us girls like to have some girl talk and she told me that she uses deodorant without aluminum for health reasons. I kept this filed away in my brain for a few months until I used up my deodorant and went to purchase a new one. I came across this brand:

I was skeptical, for sure. I bought it, used it and have not turned back since. It not only keeps me dry and odor free, but I'm not putting anything unhealthy on my skin. Now, I'm coming to the saving time part. With my old deodorant, come laundry day, I would really have to pre-treat and scrub the dickens out of the armpit area of my shirts because my old deodorant would cake on. Crystal does not. I no longer have to pre-treat and scrub my shirts. HUGE time saver.

I've been attending Alzheimer Support group meetings with my mom once a month since my step-dad was diagnosed with the disease.

Last week a remarkable gentleman, Phil, spoke to the group about his diagnosis at an early age (Phil is now 60). Phil has a positive attitude, keeps stress out of his life as much as possible and is doing all the right things to manage Alzheimer's - or as he refers to it, "Flops."

He also said something that I think everyone needs to be aware of. People with "Flops," do not dumb down once they are diagnosed. They are still able to think-it might take them a little extra time to get those thoughts out.

Phil still drives, with the aid of his GPS and still makes trips to the store, which sometimes can be challenging for him. If he cannot find an item he will ask a sales clerk or associate where the item is and that they lead him to it. If he gets a strange look, he will explain that he has Alzheimer's and that by the time he gets to the aisle where the item in question is located, he will forget why he is there. Something to think about the next time you are out and about and see someone that might need your help. Just ask if you can help.

What I have learned from attending the support group meetings is that Alzheimer's is going to double in the next several years with the baby boomer generation. That said, we need to educate ourselves as much as possible about this disease and learn what we can do to help.

Once in a great while I will plan a day to stay away from my BlackBerry, IPod, Facebook and Twitter and television and be tech free for one day. It helps me to re-focus and get back in touch with the real world. That and the fact that I sometimes suffer from information overload. Do you as well? We have so much information coming at us all the time that it can be difficult to process it all.

So, take my friend Jamie's advice and Never Apologize for Unplugging the Technology. Now, go outside and enjoy some sunshine!

Leaving Your Legacy - Downsizing for the Next Generation

So I spoke to a group today at The Old Republic in New Carlisle. Craig Langhofer from Edward Jones graciously invited me and Bob Hartig from American Funds as speakers for his ladies only luncheon that he offers once a quarter.

I talked about my clients Winnie and Ed and how they decluttered, had to move into assisted living and how I am helping them to clear their home of the contents so that it can be sold. I talked about how they are leaving their legacy.

One of the key points I made was to leave your legacy. One way to do this is to keep a journal, record or film yourself remembering events or family members or family stories. Start giving away items that you know a family member has had their eye on. Share a story or a memory about that item. Leave your legacy for the next generation.

I touched very briefly on the subject of decluttering. A great way not to get distracted when you are decluttering a space is to keep a box in the space you are decluttering marked "Move." This way when you find an object that does not belong in that space, instead of getting distracted from the task at hand to "Move" it where it belongs, you can place the item in the box and when you are done decluttering, take your "Move" box around your home and then "Move" those items.

What is clutter? Clutter is anything that you do not use, love or need. Clutter decreases the value of your life and does not support your goals. What is cluttering up your life and preventing you from leaving your legacy?

Phase II of the Estate Sale

The estate sale went very well and was a huge success! A good profit was made for the family but there are still items left.

So my next plan of attack to clear the home was to call The Community Reserve of New Carlisle. The Community Reserve is a non-profit that takes furniture, clothing, household goods and in the case of a fire or flood in the community, gives those items to those in need at no cost.

Yesterday the fine folks at The Community Reserve came out to pick up much needed items that were left over from the sale.

My next step is to have Goodwill pick up what remains - clothing, bed, books, glassware, glasses.

The goal is to have the home clear so that it can be sold and the profits monetized. I am well on my way to reaching that goal for my clients. Stay tuned for Phase III!

My Grandma - Was Always Two Steps Ahead of Me

My mom gave me an article that my grandma cut out of The Prairie Farmer Magazine dated September 4, 1982 (I was a brand new 2nd grader at that time). I was shocked when I saw who the article was about - Don Aslett, author of Clutter's Last Stand, The Office Clutter Cure and Weekend Makeover to name a few. When I first started out as an organizer, I read all of the above mentioned books. Don has a great gift for writing - he makes clutter funny and interesting and breaks down a solution in only a few simple steps.

Grandma apparently really loved the article as she underlined and circled many key points, including this: ".....get rid of the junk - 70% of the stuff we keep shuffling and rearranging." True back in 1982 and still true today.

I really think Grandma smiled down upon me when I found this article and the connection many years later. Grandma was a smart woman and she taught me so much. Among other things she taught me how to organize photos and how to organize a kitchen. She taught me how to be an organizer.

Keeping a time log is a great way to see where all of your time thieves are stealing away your precious time. For a day - or a week, even better, write down every activity and what time you start and stop. At the end of the day or week, sort your activities into categories such as - household, reading, kids, husband, school, etc. You might be shocked as to what is taking the most of your time. Then decide if some tasks can be delegated or totally removed.

Install casters on each corner of the drawer, purchase a piece of heavy plastic from your hardware store that is a little wider than the top of the drawer, secure the plastic on the two back corners and middle of the drawer with small nails or a staple gun. Make sure that you will be able to turn back the plastic enough to place or retrieve items from the drawer.

When you are organizing your photos, take a cue from your recipe file. Sort photos between tabbed dividers and label them. Some categories - vacations, birthdays, pets, weddings. Or designate one box for each category, depending on how many photos you have. Include an index card with details and dates of the photos.

Ring Ring! Hello......it's the produce section.

Yesterday hubby and I went grocery shopping. A woman ahead of us in the produce section was shopping and having a friendly conversation on her cell phone. Throughout the store we kept intersecting with her. She was on the phone the whole time - and shopping! I was really curious about whether she got everything on her list - which she didn't have - or if when she got home she would realize that she forgot an item or maybe bought something she really didn't want or need. Or maybe she is some shopping/phone talking hybrid that can shop and talk at the same time. I am not a hybrid. I need total concentration when I grocery shop........otherwise products that I would never buy jump into my cart.....and then I seem to forget that one item that I really needed, like toilet paper. (let's face it, we just can' get along without it)

So I want to know if you have ever shopped and talked at the same time? How did it go? Forget anything? Do or say anything embarrassing? (I cannot steer a cart and talk on the phone at the same time - I believe there is a dented freezer case at our local supermarket that can attest to that)

Flinging For Spring - and I Got Held Up By A Pair Of Capri Pants

Yep. I was going along so well with my flinging. Until I saw the wool capri pants - that I have not worn in at least a year. Are they in style? Are they out of style? They looked so cute the last time I wore them with my black 3/4 sleeve sweater and black embelleshed boots!

So, I used a method that I use with my clients when they are stuck on an item. It's called the "downward arrow" and I learned this method when I read Buried in Treasures by Dr. David Tolin. It goes something like this - let's pretend that I am working with a client who wants to donate her super cute wool capri pants but is stuck...

Me: What's the worst that could happen if you donate those capris?

Client: I would decide that I suddenly wanted to wear them and I would not have them.

Me: What's so bad about that?

Client: I might miss them.

Me: What's so bad about that?

Client: Nothing. It's not going to change the world. I would find another pair of pants in my closet that are just as cute.

And so that's how I got over my super cute wool capri pants that I have not worn in over a year and now have more room in my closet. I win!

I attended the Expo for Women yesterday. Had a great time. Befriended three total strangers, talked with some friends, got in free thanks to a very kind stranger with an extra ticket and got to meet Kate Gosselin and get her autograph. The latter I've caught quite a bit of heat over. I have found that there are two types of people. Ones that like Kate Gosselin and ones that hate her. I've found no middle ground here. I've watched "the show" since the very beginning when the very first episode ran way before the Jon & Kate Plus 8 show. I enjoyed the show and when I found out that Kate was going to appear at the expo I thought I would go and at least get a picture of her. So there you go. Hate me or love me for it. It is what it is.

Meanwhile, enjoy the video's I've posted to YouTube-and me putting my foot right into my mouth. What I tried to say was, "I think it's great how you are making lemonade from lemons," and it came out, "I think it's great how you are making lemons out of lemonade." Ah well -pretty much par for the course with me!
